"John Purves was born in Scotland in 1745.He came to South Carolina in1770, and in April of that year was granted 150 acres of land onTurkey Creek in Granville County, near present-day Edgefield, and soonbecame an active figure in the Revolution.He was a member of the firstcongress of the province, which metin January and June of 1775; inJune, he was commissioned as captain of a ranger company of the ThidSouth Carolina Regiment.Exactly one year later, Purves fought atSullivan's Island, where Sir Henry Clinton's first attempt to takeCharleston was defeated.When the South Carolina regiments were madepart of the Continental army, Purves appears to have remained with thelocal militia, and he ended the war as lieutenant colonel of the LowerNinety-six Militia Regiment.After the war, he served in the SouthCarolina legislature and became an extensive landholder, acquiringthousands of acres, opposite Augusta and near "Campbelltown" in hisadopted state."
