Mark Powell was born in Northampton County, Va. about 1768. He wasliving in Sampson County 3 Oct. 1803 when his father deeded him the1691 3 acres on Six Runs (m). He received a land grant for 90 acresbeside his own property, (n). His marriage to Zilpha Cooper, daughterof Capt. John Cooper, may have been his second because, in thesettlement of the estate of William Vann in Aug. 1834, Mark received a1/9 share along with Vann's children, (o). Mark was father of 12children, six of whom were minors at the time of his death the summerof 1836 (p). The children named in his will were (q): Peyton Matthewwhose wife Elizabeth died in Arkansas April 1856 (r); Patience whomarried Woodard Barden of Turkey and died Aug. 1896 (s); Arcada whomarried Jason Pearson of Sampson County; Coore N. who married MargaretColwell and moved to Georgia; Ann who married Henry E. Smith (t);Benjamin Joseph; Mary never married; Luke Andrews (see later); Exumwho married Molly Peterson and second Mrs. Oswald; John G. who marriedMrs. Martha Ann Kelly; Amos S.C., an innkeeper and Sheriff of SampsonCounty, married Dicey Ann Spell; and Sherod C. who died young.
