Matthew Powell, born in Isle of Wight County, Va. about 1731 as heowned land there in 1752 (h) which he sold with the signature of wifeSarah in May 1753. (i). He followed his father to Northampton Countyand obtained a Granville Grant Nov. 1756. (j). He reared a family anddied there at a ripe old age in 1829, leaving a will naming a daughterAnn Ferrell, a granddaughter Elizabeth Carroll, and six sons Benjamin,Luke, Mark, Richard, Willie and Lewis Powell, (k). Matthew had boughtseveral tracts in Old Duplin on Six Runs Creek, in the part that wasto become Sampson County in 1784. He settled three of his sons there, each on a 169 1/3 acre plot. There is no evidence that he ever livedin Duplin or Sampson as all three deeds were made by Matthew Powell ofNorthampton and to Luke and Mark of Sampson and to Lewis ofNorthampton. Luke and Rebecca never had any children. Mark will bediscussed later. Lewis had died before 3 Oct. 1839 when his sonMatthew bought out the other heirs, Mary, Susannah, Lewis, Jr. andBathsheba the wife of Kenan Merritt (I).
