"Thomas Powell, Jr. (c. 1696-1754) married Elizabeth Ward. They heardthat the land in North Carolina was producing better tobacco thantheirs in Virginia where they had been growing tobacco every year forabout 100 years. They sold their Isle of Wight land (f), and paddledtheir boats down the Blackwater to the Meherrin, then the ChowanRiver, and settled in Northampton County where he died 1754 leaving awill with legacies to wife Elizabeth, daughters Ann, and Keziah, andan only son Matthew, (g).
