9/12/1918 #1 Wayside, Montgomery Co, KS was James Flannagan"s addresswhen he registered for the draft. At age 44, he verified his birthdate as posted and gave farming as his occupation. He listed wifeDella May at the same address as his nearest relative. TheRegistrar's report said he was medium height and build with blue eyesand dark gray hair. Others registering from Wayside were Hugh and EdFlannagan. No other Flannigan/Flaningams from that county werelisted.
1/29/1920 Still there. That census taker listed James Flannagan, 45,Della M, 38 (58 in the index), with sons W H, 18, and J E, 15, anddaughters Elva F, 8, and Beula V, 6. James worked as a farmer andrented the home. Does this mean he had given up his own farm or washe a tenet farmer?
5/6/1930 Same residence. Recorded there that year were JamesFlanagan, 56, married for the first time at age 26 to Della M, 48, whowas 18. Children in the house were: James E, 25, Elva L, 19, BeulahV, 16. James owned the farm and had a radio; son James was a Nebraskapipe liner and Elva was a law stenographer.
6/24/1940 Same residence as 1935 and the past several years. Bycensus time that year, James Flanagan, 66, was a widower living aloneon the farm, working 52 weeks in the past 12 months. He had completedone year of high school.
