Re: Ward and Campbell in Stokes county NC
"I believe the John Campbell who married Sarah Ward in Stokes County,N C may be the same John Campbell who was later in Bedford, thenLincoln C ounties, Tennessee and Madison County, AL, living next toWilliam Campb ell in Madison County, AL in 1810. That William Campbellb. ca. 1745 wa s definitely the William in Stokes County as per thelawsuit in Madison C ounty, AL filed by the wagon maker from StokesCounty who made and supp lied his party's wagons. William was marriedto Lydia (I think it was C rump), and died in Bedford County, TN in1817; his will was written and p robated there. It's clear from themarriage records of the children he n amed in his will, also that thisis one and the same William Campbell w ho was also in Stokes County,NC and Madison County, IL (AL?). His olde st daughters were married inStokes County, NC and his youngest in Madi son County, AL. On the 1809and 1810 property tax records for Madison C ounty, Alabama he wasliving next to (Rev.) Alexander A. Campbell, a mu ch younger man, andJohn Campbell. Nearby were James C. Crump, and Isai ah Ward, amongothers. Isaiah married in Madison County, Alabama about a y ear afterJohn Campbell took another wife, Aney Webster--relative to Sh adrachWebster who married Sarah Campbell, daughter of William, back in Stokes County. I'm also looking for the parents of Sarah Ward, and form ore proof that John is one of William's sons. I'm over 90% certainthat R ev. Alexander A. Campbell was a son of William. Rev. AlexanderA. Campb ell, according to a notice in the "Jackson Gazette" in theearly 1830's , was traveling with a William Campbell in Haywood Countyand letters a rrived there addressed to the Rev. Alexander Campbelland WILLIAM Campb ell, and had been in the post office at Covington,in Haywood County lo ng enough to be listed as dead letters requiringa public notice. In th e notice it said that EITHER Alexander orWilliam could pick up the let ters. This indicates they were of thesame immediate family. William ap parently died before his father didas he is not mentioned in his fathe r's will or codicil, as his nextbrother Erasmus is. Erasmus appears in a c odicil, but not the willitself. In 1790 the only two male headed Campb ell families in StokesCounty were headed by William and an Archibald. I b elieve Archibaldmay have been a brother. William also was in Patrick C ounty, VA fromtime to time. Patrick was preceded by Pittsylvania and o thers wherefamilies were more connected to counties where Robert Campb ell'sdescendants lived. Now if anyone knows anything about the Isaiah W ardwho married Rebecca Webster, June 21, 1820 in Madison County, Alaba mawe might get some additional answers."
