Notes for John ARTHUR

"John Arthur Jr. (father of Aaron) was born 1772, probably in Virginia
He died Oct. 3, 1824 in Greene County. He migrated to Greene County,
Indiana around 1819 and is the ancestor of the Greene County Arthurs.J ohn
died only six years after settling in Greene County. He was followedt o
Indiana by a brother, Elias, in 1820, who settled in the adjacentcoun ty of
Jackson. Elias is our ancestor. John and Elias were very earlysettler s
in Indiana and most all Southern Indiana Arthurs are descended fromth ese
two brothers."

Suzy Bennett on Gaskins in Craven Co said Elizabeth and John had only6 c hildren but listed only these 4: Michael, Alice, Elizabeth,Sidney

Donald Arthur posted on an Ancestry board:

"My line runs from John Arthur/Briget, James Arthur/Sarah, JohnArthur/ Elizabeth Gaskins, Michael Arthur/Sidney Gatlin, GilbertGatlin Arthur/ Sarah Theresa Tuten, William Roberson Arthur/NancyPauline Arthur, Will iam Rudolph Arthur/Eura Mae French."

"My ggggrandmother was Elizabeth Gaskins who married John Arthur inCra ven Co. on Dec. 21, 1782. They went with my gggrandfather, Aaron,and o ther children to Wayne (or Whitley, names changed) County, KY,and then t o Greene Co. IN, where my ggrandfather Martin Van BurenArthur married A nne Burch. They moved to Fayette Co., IA, where mygrandfather, William D avis Arthur, married Louisa Knudsen and had 9children, including my mo ther Marian."

Residences & events:

1790 Craven Co, NC. The census recorded John Arthur with a familycon sisting of 1 male under the age of 16, John was over 16, and 2females. F our doors down was William Arther, under 16 with 1 female,and farther d own were Thomas and William Gaskins; in the otherdirection were Joshua , Fisher, and Joseph Gaskins. On the previouspage were Joseph and Law son Arthur.

1800 Same place. The family had grown by the next census time. JohnA rthur was age 26-44 with a family of 6: 1 male under 10, 1 age10-15, 1 f emale under 10, 1 at 10-15, and his wife also 26-44. Oneslave was als o counted there. At the bottom of the page was WilliamGaskins, others o n the previous page. John and Lyson (Lawson?)Arthur were the only one s by the name left in the county.

1810 Knox Co, KY. Before the next census, much of the family hadmove d west. In Knox were Elias, John, John Jr, Joseph and SamuelArthur. H e was most likely John Jr, age 26-44 with 4 males under 10,1 age 10-15 , 3 females under 10, 1 at 10-15, 1 was 16-25, and hiswife also 26-44, n o slaves. No Gaskins had followed them there.

1818 Whitley Co, KY was carved from Knox, leaving John in the newcoun ty.

From Whitley Co, KY Minute Book 1:

Ordered that William Stephenson be appointed Surveyor of the Roadleadi ng from the shallow ford above the mouth of Laurell to theshallow ford
p. 12 above the mouth of rockcastle and he together with all thehand s from the mouth of Laurell down and all the hands from the northside o f Laurell below John Arthurs shall keep the same in Repair.

December 1818
p. 43 Ordered that John Mchargue be appointed surveyor to open a roadf rom Mchargues mill to intersect the Goose creek salt works roadleading t o this place and he together with the hands living onlincamp, Spruice a nd what lives on the south side of Laurell and toinclude John Arthur o n the north side and down Watts creek to includeMalen Bishop shall cut o ut the same.

February 1819
p. 51 Ordered by the Court that James Davis Jr., Christopher Grubb,Jo hn Davis, John Arthur & John Rogers be appointed Reviewers of aroad le ading from Nehemiah Sumners

May 1819
p 55 Ordered that John Arthur Snr. and John Arthur Jr. be alloted toD aniel Morgans precinct and Two of the Magees. Daniel Targ, WilliamEat ton [?], Prior Eatton, Free Sexson, Enoch Sexson, Robert Long,Mark Sum ner, George Sumner, & Jeree Newton be alloted to work on theroade unde r Daniel Morgan leading from Rockcastle to Laurel river towork three d ays on said road when called on by the surveyor and to beExept from wo rking so many days on the rode the [they] have beenheretofore alloted t o.

1819 Beech Creek Twp, Sullivan Co, IN, according to relatives.

1820 Monroe Co, IN. At census time there were living there, said tob e brothers John, Joseph and Samuel Arthur, plus another John inDelawar e Co. They were the only Arthurs in the state. However, thisJohn was n ot one of them as he was older.

1821 Greene Co was carved from Sullivan, leaving John in the newcount y.
