"While residing in Washington County, North Carolina (later GreeneCoun ty, Tennessee), James Pearce, by order of Col. Sevier, raised acompany o f volunteers during the summer of 1779 and marched to theFrench Broad R iver to prevent the Indians from crossing. In thespring of 1780 he ra ised a company and marched to the beaverdam onLick Creek to resist the I ndians. Early in the fall of 1780 hemarched with Col. Sevier and was i n the battle at Kings Mountain.After returning home he received orders f rom Sevier to guard thefrontier against Indian attacks."
