Notes for Moses PRESTON

Moses enlisted in 1779 under Major Hill's Company in Colonel AbrahamBu ford's Regiment in Halifax County, Virginia.

He participated in the battles of Milford, Camden, and Ninety-Six. Hes erved a total of 18 months.

He also served under Captain Bowyer in Colonel Campbell's regiment asw ell as serving under George Washington.

According to the Revolutionary War Records of Virginia, page 261,Moses w as one of several soldiers who was reported to the Senate ofthe United S tates, as not having claimed his Warrants (Land Grant)and as of 1835 n o Bounty land was received.

"Moses was a private in the Virginia Line during the RevolutionaryWar. O n 1 Jan 1826, he testified he was about 58 years old (born1766), and w as living in Law Co., Ky. On 18 Jun 1828, as a residentof Lawrence Co. , Ky., he testified that he was bout 66 years old(born 1764), that he e nlisted for eighteen months in 1781 in Halifax,Va., under Captain Bowy er in the Regiment commanded by Col. Hill inVa. He was discharged in 1 783 in S.C. He obtained a pension of $5.00,per month."

Moses and Frances settled abt. 1800 at the mouth of Beaver Creek onthe B ig Sandy River on the Morgan Farm near Allen in Floyd Co., KY.

About 1814, they moved to Deep Gut Branch on the Levisa Fork justsouth o f the Mouth of Georges Creek. Moses and Frances both diedthere.

"The first non-Indian in Lawrence county was in 1674 when GabrielArthu r, was led and prodded past the forks of the Big Sandy, shackledand te rrified, as an Indian captive. In 1754, Mrs. Mary Ingles wasthe first w hite woman in the area now known as Lawrence County, who,with some Dut ch women floated on driftwood across the big Sandy belowthe forks, esc aping pursuing Shawnees.

The first settler was Charles Vancouver; he obtained a land grant neart he forks and labeled it a "short cut" to Virginia. His settlement,Vanc ouver's Fort, established in 1789, now the site of Louisa, hadall its i nhabitants run off by Indians in 1790.

Early settlers were Christopher Moore on Georges Creek; Andy Rule,Keet on's Mill; Richard Kezee, McDowell's Camp; Jesse Barnett, GilbertBarne t, John McDowell, Andrew Woods, Neri Ward, John Smith, JamesVinson, Mo ses Preston, David Graham and John Bryan. Lawrence Countywas formed in 1 822 from sections of Floyd and Greenup Counties. ."






Some have his death date as 12/3/1844.
Moses' grave is marked with a government stone. It reads: VA Line/Revo lutionary War Soldier/Served under George Washington / h/o ofFanny Art hur
