(crossed outTheophilis Blake an d Joseph Horton). was born in Bedford Co in 1761until thirty years sin ce (1832) when he moved to Greenbrier Co wherehe resided about ten yea rs when he moved to Jackson Co OH where henew resides and has resided a bout twenty years. Mrs. E. S. Moss ofWilliamsburg, KY said to be desce ndant of Joel in letter. said sheread p. 622 McAllisters Militia Joel A rthur age 83 living in 1835 onPension List. He marched through Richmon d thence stationed betweenLittle York & Norfolk, until sometime in the m onth of September,following he thinks he served 3 1/2 months at which t ime he wasdischarged.

PENSION: Joel Arthur S16034. VA Line applied 19 Sep 1832 Jackson Co OHa ged 71 born 1761 Bedford Co, VA and enlisted there and then in 1802mov ed to Greenbrier Co VA for 10 years and then to Jackson Co, OH.

BIO: District No. 2. The Joel Arthur house on the hill a shortdistance w est of it was built about 1816 and there is a traditionthat one of his s ons shot a deer at the lick nearby from the upstairswindow on the west s ide. A grandson, Thomas Arthur, now owns the oldhomestead. Many other d escendants live in the county. Joel Arter(this is the spelling on his t ombstone) died Sep 15, 1837, aged 69years. Nancy, his wife, preceded h im No.v 16, 1835, aged 77 years.they were buried on the high point of t he hill west of the house anda number of other pioneers lie beside the m. The house descended totheir son, Azariah, who died Oct. 8, 1886. Ha nging Rock Iron Regionby Eugene Willard Vol. 1 1916 p 393 and others.

"Joel Arthur b. born 1761 in Goose Creek, Bedford County, Va. diedSept ember 15, 1837 in Jefferson Twp., Jackson County, Ohio. JoelArthur was d rafted from Bedford to serve in the Revolutionary War.His first tour o f duty was in 1780 and lasted for 4 months then hewas discharged. His n ext tour of duty is in 1781 which lasted for 31/2 months then he was d ischarged."

BIRTH: His birth year comes from his pension file which says born 1761a nd age 71 in 1832, but his tombstone says age 79 at death in 1837(b. 1 758).

Here rests a Revolutionary War Soldier, Joel Arthur, to whom we areind ebted for our Independence. He died in Jackson County in 1837 andwas r ecently honored there with a new Marker for Valor and Service tohis Co untry.
