"John married Priscilla Arthur. It appears her name was Arthur beforeh er marriage and was most likely a cousin. I think that she may havebee n the daughter of Thomas Arthur (not so, Uncle Thomas did nothave dau ghter Priscille) who lived in Bedford County, Virginia. Hementions a d aughter name Priscilla in his will. Now this is adifferent Thomas Arth ur than the other one who lived in BedfordCounty and who traveled with t his Arthur clan for a while. There weretwo Thomas Arthurs in Bedford C ounty, Virginia.
John was an interesting person. While in the Revolutionary War heserve d from the State of Virginia. In 1784, he served in CaptainSatherwaits ' Company in the Militia of North Carolina. In 1790, Johnand his famil y were in Lincoln County, North Carolina. In 1792, theyare in Craven C ounty, North Carolina. In 1795, they were in LeeCounty, Virginia and b y 1800,
they were back in Lincoln County again. This is just a summary oftheir t ravels. John was a restless soul....
John Arthur was a well known Longhunter. These were men who would goon h unting expeditions that could last for months. Because of hisknowledge o f that part of the country, John Arthur was hired by theState of Kentu cky to survey the state. He knew the country by heartand was one of th e very early explorers in North Carolina andKentucky. He completed the s urvey in 1792."
