Notes for Ambrose ARTHUR

"I know that the earlier Ambrose ARTHUR (War of 1812) who m. Jane wasa s on of Thomas ARTHUR."

Military service: served as Cpt. in War of 1812 in 13th KY VolunteerIn f. He participated in Col William Dudley's defeat opposite FortMeigs i n May 1813.

The inscription on his gravestone says he also fought in another war:
Capt in 10 Ky Regiment in Civil War

Residences & events:

11/1809 Ambrose and sister Susannah Stewart were administrators ofthe e state of her husband Charles. An inventory of his estatereturned to C ourt of Knox, County in November of 1809.

From The Stewart Family:

"Judging from old court records of Knox County, the Court was notsatis fied with the management of the estate of Charles Stewart byMartin Mil ler, Susannah’s new husband. On "May 5, 1811, [a]napplication of Ambro se Arthur, one of the administrators of CharlesStewart decd., the Cour t has thought proper to release him from theburden of administration, a nd have ordered Joseph Eve and RichardBallinger to settle with the sai d Arthur any money on hand oraccounts that in his possession, and repo rt the same especially tonext court as well as to return all monies on h and or account asshall be delivered to them and ordered that a subpoen a do be issuedagainst Martin Miller and Susannah Miller, late Susannah S tewart toshow cause, if any, why the estate of Charles Stewart, decd., s hallnot be taken out of their hands and she removed from being administratrix.” On the following day, the Court (May 6, 1811) “[o]rderedthat T homas Arthur, Jr., be appointed administrator of CharlesStewart, decd. , and he together with James Bailey and Arthur Nailacknowledge their b ond in the penalty of $1000."

8/7/1820 South East side of Cumberland River, Knox Co, KY. AmbroseAr thur was age 26-44 at census time, his family included 1 male under10, 3 f emales under 10 and his wife also 26-44. He was engaged inagriculture . Next door was Hezekiah Gooden, most likely a relativeof sister Sara h's husband. In the same county were Ambrose's parentsand brother Tho mas.

April 1818 Term

p. 6 Ambrows Arthur and Nathaniel Rochester of Knox County is and areh ereby appointed commissioners to fix upon the seat of Justice ofWhitl ey county and they are hereby authorized and requested by thecourt to p roceed to the establishment of the same at the earliestperiod convenie nt for them to do so according to law. and it isfurthur ordered by th e Court that the said commissioners above nameddo meet at the house of S amuel Cox (the present place of holding saidCourt) on the 2d Monday in M ay next and from thence proceed to theestablishment of said seat of Ju stice as aforesd.

Whitley County Monday 8th June 1818.
We the commissioners appointed by the Worshipped court of sd county ino bedience to an order of sd court and an act of the general assemblyof t he commonwealth of Kentucky met at the house of Samuel Cox in sdcounty o n the day and date first above written for the purpose ofpointing out t he most Elligible and centereal spot in sd county forthe purpose of Er ecting the public buildings thereon being firstsworn and directing our v iews alone to that of a public goodindependant of personal or partial i nterest after mature deliberationhad on the subject do unanimously agr ee & point out the "south Bankof Cumberland River between the house wh ere Samuel Cox now lives insd county and a cabbin occupied at this tim e by Benjamin Parson for aGrocery as the Spot for the purpose above

p 11 Ordered that Richardson Herndon be allowed Ten shillings pr Dayf or Six days servise in fixing the county seat and that AmbrowsArthur, R obert Baine, & James Chitwood be allowed 10 shillings pr dayfor Six da ys servise each and that James Renfrew receive 10/- pr Dayfor Four day s servise to be paid out of the county levee

Descendants say he was deputy sheriff of Knox Co, KY.

8/23/1850 Knox Co, KY. In that census were Ambrose Arthur, 74, bornV A; wife Jane G, 62, born SC; and Edward F, 20, born KY. Ambrose'soccu pation was P.M. (?), he had a large spread worth $2200 which sonEdward m ust work as he was the farmer. A black Arthur family headedby a 53 ye ar old woman with a black 30 year old daughter and 2 smallmulatto chil den lived next door. Ambrose's freed slaves? There wereseveral other A rthurs, black and white, in the county.

His parents are buried in the same cemetery but where was his wifeburi ed?
