Edward was one of the signers on May 1, 1780, of Petition #12 thatresu lted in splitting "Kentucky County, Virginia, into 3 counties:Jefferso n, Fayette, and Lincoln. Part of the petition reads, "Thatthe Militia I nhabitants of the north side of Kaintucky amount toabout 400 with 11 f ortified posts … that the nearest settlement tothe Courthouse is at le ast 40 miles and the farthest about 70 miles… that the River Kentuckey i s rendered impassable half the year byhigh waters & is ever inconvenie nt and Dangerous …" The petitionwas approved by the Virginia Legislatu re."
