Notes for Henry VAN GUNDY


Henry was not listed among Christian's heirs, neither listed onChristian's gravestone nor among those who signed a deed, so probablywas not Christian's son but because he was in Buffalo Valley, PA atthe same time, is placed here until his lineage has been determined.

Following the formation of PA counties, it appears Henry may not havemoved at all but rather as county lines moved around him, hisresidence changed:

1796 Lycoming from Northumberland
1800 Centre from Lycoming/Mifflin/Northumberland/Huntingdon
1839 Clinton from Centre/Lycoming

Miles Township - As early as 1794 a petition was presented to thequarter Sessions of Northumberland Coujnty for a division of HainesTwonship, setting forth that Pen's and Brush valleys were divided by alofty mountain which renders communication difficult, and praying thata division line be run along the Middle Mountain. The court appointedsix commissioners, but their report cannot be found, or any record ofthe erection of Miles township. The township, however was organizedin 1797, and an assessment made this year, upon which were thefollowing taxable inhabitants:

The family of Henry Van Gundy came up from Buffalo valley, and boughtof Mrs. Van Gundy's brother, James Burney, one-half his farm, theportion on which John Grugan now lives.

From History of Lycoming Pennsylvania, Enumberation of taxables for1800:
Lower Bald Eagle....Henry Gundy, farmer; James Burney, farmer (Henry'sbrother-in-law)

9/1/1850 Venango Twp, Crawford Co, PA. The census taker found thefamily of Henry Gundy, 83, living next door to son John. Living withHenry were Susanah, 65, Jane, 20, and Sarah, 19, the entire family wasborn in PA. Henry apparently had sold off his farm and retired as noreal estate was recorded.
He was mentioned in the will of son John in 1852.
