1767 - on list of tithables in Pittsylvania Co., VA; listed next tohim i s Moses Riddell, Indian 1772-1780: Lived in present day GraysonCo., VA a long Peach Bottom Creek or in the Elk Creek District. 1774 -Fought at t he Battle of Point Pleasant in Herbert's company. 1774 -In Montgomery C ounty court records in 1774 William Riddle (Ridley)and Caijah Bunch ar e defendants in a suit brought by William Herbert,assignee of Hugh Smi th 1776 - A man named William Riddle was thesecond of four assignees t o Jeremiah Clonch, who settled 400 acres in1776 on the west side of Ch estnut Creek, off the New River 1777 -Swore Allegiance to the Whig sid e while a member of Capt. John Cox'scompany 1779 - brought before the c ourt as a Tory. "William Riddleand Nathaniel Brittain not entitled to i nvitation of the mercy of thecourt..."
1780 - "Petition of James Roberts, Jesse Meeks and William Riddlerecei ved as members of the community as long as they behave as GoodCitizens ..." in the same court session: - George Reeves, JamesHowell, William R oberts, Neal Roberts, Moses Johnson, Richard Green,Richard Wright, Cle m Lee and George Herd were restored theirproperty.

1780 - Riddell's "gang" raids the home of Capt. John Cox. 1780-1:Hidin g out in the Wolf's Den on Riddle's Knob in present day WataugaCo., NC w ith a Tory band. Spring 1781: Leader of a Tory band thatcaptured Col. B enjamin Cleveland. Cleveland escaped. 1781: Cleveland(or perhaps more l ikely Capt. Martin) captures Riddle in a skirmishand hangs him at Wilk esboro, NC, possibly along with son MosesRiddle. Selethia Martin's wid ow's pension app. and John Speltz RWpension app: While camped at a Roc k House on New River Capt. Martincaptured the Tories except two who es caped: Lewis Collins and DavidGibson. 1782 - In the court records of M ontgomery County, Virginia in1782, Hoppe Riddle, William Riddle's wife , (spelled "Happy," in otherrecords ) sued for the return of her cow w hich had been takenillegally by Capt. William Love in 1780 as he pursu ed Tories. Also,her two sons, James and John, were bound out by the Mo ntgomery CountyCourt the same year. 1784 - Happy marries William Ingra m (RW pensionfile #S21314). Inventory of the estate of William Riddle. S hortlythereafter William Ingram and Happy move to the Kyles Ford area i npresent day Hancock Co., TN.
William married Happy Roberts (daughter of Tory Capt. James Roberts ora lternatively is a Rogers); William and Happy's children: Moses, hungby B enjamin Cleveland (?); James later of Cumberland Co., KY m. SarahDavis ; John m. Sarah Johnson (daughter of Moses Johnson d. HawkinsCo., TN a nd Sarah); Happy m. Henry Fisher (RW pension file #R26119);Joseph late r of Cumberland Co., KY m. Rhoda Monk (daughter ofShadrack Monk and Ma ry Roberts -- Mary is the daughter of CorneliusRoberts and Mary Benton ); Isaac m. Anna Grizzle; Thomas later ofBradley Co., TN m. Mary Igou ( daughter of James Igou and RebeccaThompson); William m. Ellen Choat (C herokee Indian in part).

Jo hn Cox. In 1778 he marched on theCherokee from the Long Island of the H olston and served 4 months.

But Ace Maupin sparked a dispute at Ancestry when he posted this::

"For Capt William Riddle the Tory to have been the son of this racialg roup would be very near to impossible.

Capt William Riddle the Tory could not have been the son of MosesRiddl e the Indian Mulatto and tri racial mixed African wife That wasthe rul es and the law for all in the Brittish forces. In this caseCapt Willia m Riddle the Tory had to be a White Riddle from anotherline other than t he Mualtto indian line that is very clear."
