1860 He and brother Oliver must be on the move that year as neitherca n be found at census time.
5/16/1862 Camp Smith, TN At age 28 he mustered into the ConfederateA rmy in Co E GA 3rd Cavalry as a Pvt in Capt John D Pop's Company,Howar d's Batt'n for a period of 3 years of the war.
On the same day and place S Powell, 23, also mustered in. Was thisbro ther Sevier?

"The 3rd Confederate Cavalry [aka: 11th Cavalry] was another of Gen'lW heeler's commands for the greater part of the war. Seven of thecompani es were Alabamians and included the cavalry battalionn ofMajor W. N. E stes which merged into the 3rd. The regiment operatedaround the Army o f Tennessee, and was in several battles and raids,and in innumerable s kirmishes...."

8/6/1870 Trenton, Dade Co, GA. Having lost his wife the previousyear , the census taker found Newton Powel, 36, living among Mahanin-laws. H e was counted with widow Sarepty Mahan, 31, next door topossibly her w idowed mother. Brother Sevier lived two doors down. inthe other direc tion. Two doors farther on were his children, sonsCalop, 12, Leander, 1 0, daughter, Olley, 8, and sons James and John,6 and 4 respectively, l iving in a household of children, FranklinWallis was the oldest at 15. B ut between them and Sevier were Johnand Nancy Mahan, possibly the gran dparents.
6/21/1880 Pond Spring, Walker Co, GA. That year at census timeNewton P owell, 44, had his three children living with him, daughterOllie, 17, a nd sons James L, 15, and John W, 13. Everyone was bornin GA. Newton a nd the boys were farm laborers. Two pages back inthe same township wa s nephew Francis Marion.
6/26/1900 Kensington, Walker Co, GA. Newton Powell, 68, born GA, wasa s ingle man and head of the house living there with a Forresterfamily li ving with him as boarders. Newton was a farmer, Forresterwas a farm l aborer. Two doors down was William Powell, 53.

On the application he verified his birth date and place as posted,said h e lived in GA all his life in Walker Co, was in Co "E" B5Confederate R egiment and served during the entire war beingdischarged in 1865 south o f Atlanta and was not present at surrender.He left his command when h e was captured on Lookout Mountain, 1864,on Hood (the rest unreadable) . His occupation since 1865 wasfarming. He based his application on a ge and poverty of about 3years.
1910 He disappeared before next census time.
He provided the date and place of his birth for his confederatepension a pplicion.
