Ga., with a newwife, Elizabeth Burke, a f ew children from his first wife Sarah, anda new daughter named Mournin g."

Due to the gap in children's ages, Leander may havecome to the m arriage with Elizabeth but was listed as a Powell. SonLewis R lived n ext door, son Ambrose was in the same township.

Recordedin t hat census were Lewis Powell, Sen, 62, with wife Elizabeth, 32,and chi ldren: Sevier, 20; Mourning, 11; Nanceny, 7; Irwin, 5, andUpstarnt, 3 . Lewis was born in GA, Elizabeth in SC, Sevier in TN andthe rest of t he children also in GA. Lewis was a farmer with$1300/2700 worth of pr operty. Having more personal property thanland indicates he may have a lso been a blacksmith or other occupationbesides farming. A J McDanie l, blacksmith, lived four doors down theroad but had no property so pe rhaps he worked for Lewis. Son Lewislived in the same district with m any other Powells in the samecounty.
A descendent said he is " believed to be buried in the Powell Cemeteryo n the east side of Lookout Mountain, Ga., the old George MasseyPropert y on Hwy. 136 in Ga." Unfortunately current owners of thefarm won't a llow visitors to the estimated 30 graves there.
