Order from: Staley Publishing and GenealogicalRe search, PO Box 7, Patterson, NC 28661-0007 On the basis of bothdocumen tary and circumstantial evidence so far found, it appears thatthe earl iest provable ancestor of the Powells of Caldwell Co. wasJohn Powell, b orn perhaps around 1715 in Virginia, and died in 1782in Burke Co. (Now C aldwell Co.). He married in Virginia to MaryO'Neal, and lived for some y ears in Culpeper (now Madison) county,Va., but in 1755 removed to Oran ge (now Alamance) Co. NC, and in 1779to Burke (now Caldwell) county. H e had at least six sons, perhapsmore: the traditional number seven may b e correct. Those who appearcertain were John Jr., Ambrose, Elias, Robe rt, Benjamin, and Elijah; Two possible others were James and Thomas. Of t hese, only Elias hasleft descendants in Caldwell county."
