"From Ron Collins 8 Jan 2007 My great grandparents Hiram Collins &Pheb e Tucker had 11 known children, and out of 5 sons, 4 of themserved in t he Civil War. As far I can tell Hiram never owned anyland, except for 7 5 acres that was given to him by father in hiswill. Then I find that h e lost that by having to borrow money againstit."

1830 Surry Co, NC. According to that census, Hiram Collins was 20-30y ears old, his wife was 15-20, they had a little boy under 5, Thelived i n a row of relatives, being between his widowed mother Patsyand sister J uriah and Joshua Finney who were next door to brotherSidney, follwed b y sister Mary and Peter Castevens.

1840 Same place. In Hiram Collins' family at census were 2 malesunde r 5, 1 age 5-9, 1 was 10-14, Hiram was 30-39, 2 fmales under 5, 1age 5 -9, and his wife was 20-29. Several neighbors were named Money,relati ves of future daughter-in-law Mary. Brother Sidney and severalother C ollins families lived in the same county.

8/9/1850 South Div, Surry Co, NC. Hiram Collins, 48, was found thereb y the census taker with a large family consisting of Phebe, 39,Obediah , 19, Catharine, 16, Almeda, 14, David, 12, Amanda, 10, LewisW, 9, Dic y, 7, Elisabeth, 4, and Mary A, 1, all born in NC. Hiramand Obediah w ere labourers. Soon to be son-in-law David Hudspethlived next door wi th his widowed mother.

9/14/1860 Bald Knob, Yadkin Co, NC. Recorded in that census wereHiram C ollins, 65, farm laborer with only $30 in personal property;Pheby, 45, D avid, 22, also a farm laborer; Mandy, 15, "serving;"Lewis, 14, Dicy, 1 2, Elisabeth, 10, and Lafayette, 8. Son Calvinlived next door. Daugh ter Catharine and David Hudspeth lived in thesame area.

8/1/1870 Hotel Twp Surry Co, NC. Before the next census the familyha d jumped across the border to the next county. He was listed asHiram C ollens, 71, his wife's name was Salley, 50, son Fate, 17, wasstill at h ome. Hiram and Fate were farm laborers.

Hotel township was changed to Elkin on 2/4/1893 by the NC GeneralAssem bly. Elkin sits literally on the border of Yadkin Co justacross the b order from Wilkes Co.
