Notes for William McLain CHILCOTE


A History of the Juniata Valley says:

"William McLain, son of Benjamin and Comfort (McLain) Chilcote, wasbor n in Clay township, Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania, June lo,1797, die d April 12, 1880. He was a practical, prosperous farmer,moving after h is marriage to Cromwell township, where he spent hisafter life. In Sep tember, 1835, he immigrated with his family andsome of his relatives t o what was then the "West," Licking county,Ohio, making the journey wi th a four-horse team in thirteen days. Herented a farm four miles from G ranville, but in March, 1836, hereturned to Huntingdon county. He was a n earnest Christian, and aclass leader of the Methodist Episcopal chur ch. He married (first) inClayton township, near Saltillo, Keziah Long, w ho died October 3,1847. He married (second) Permelia Martin, born in P erry county,Penn-
sylvania. Children by his first wife: i. James S. 2. John W. 3. Sarah,m arried Daniel Heck, and died in 1865. 4. B. F., born July 14, 1829;mar ried Ruhama Miller; he was a soldier in the Union army. 5. ThomasL., o f whom further. 6. Mary E., married Thomas Webb.
Children by his second wife: 7. Margaret J., married (first) LaurenceH agbloom! (second) George Doughman. 8. Rebecca E., married GeorgeNumer. "

"William M. Chilcoat, who was born in Clay township, Huntingdoncounty, J une 10, 1797, was more thoroughly educated in practicalmatters, especi ally such as pertained to the cultivation of the soil,than in the know ledge obtained from books. He was married to KeziahLong in Clay townsh ip, near Saltillo; a year later they removed toCromwell township, wher e he passed the remainder of his life."
