SETTLEMENT.---Of the first settlers in Perry county were three men whoc ame from Sussex county, New Jersey, about 1800....

Other early settlers were as follows: Cornelius Sullivan, WilliamBaird ,David Miller, George Dills, Jonathan Ward, Andrew Wolfe, HenryCunning ham, John Cunningham, Cornelius Dills, Alexander Baird,Aurelius Mason, W illiam Melick, Joseph Burgess, Absalom Danison,Alfred Baird, Robinson C hilcote, William Rinker, Philip Miller, HiramTurner, Ensor Chilcote, J ohn Humble, Joseph Hamilton, Abraham Craig,William McCluney, Thomas Sa wyer, Edward Danison, Jerome Plummer....

CHURCHES.---Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church was first organized as ac lass in about 1818, and first met at Robinson Chilcote's house. In1819 , April 17, they obtained a deed for two acres of land fromPhilip Mill er, upon which they built a hewed log church, which stooduntil 1838. T he first trustees were James Chilcote, Joseph Claypool,James Porter, R obinson Chilcote. Nathan Chilcote, Nicholas Rible andJohn Shaw. In 183 6 they bought one-fourth of an acre more from JoshuaPlummer, and in 18 38 supplanted the hewed log church by a brick housenear the site of th e old church....

When the brick was built in 1838, under the pastorate of Rev. M. A.Mil ligan, Nathan Chilcote, Henry Roberts, Vincent Kelley, JamesPorter, Ph ilip Miller, Israel Moore and Samuel Curran were trustees.The present t rustees are Joshua Chilcote, Isaiah Rible, JosephKoehler, J. W. Chilco te, Leonard Reddick, James E. Beard and S. Shaw. The first members w ere Robinson Chilcote and wife, John Shaw andwife, Mrs. Chilcote, Phil ip Miller and wife, Nathan Chilcote and wife Robinson Chilcote and N athan Chilcote were the first class leaders.Nathan Chilcote was an exh orter; Robert Ellis was the first minister,
