THE EARLIEST ULRICHS
(From unpulished information supplied in July 1980 by Fre d E. Ullery.H is sources are unknown. This information, in turn, was in thepossessio n of James D. Boor, Box 203, R. D. 1, New Enterprise, PA16664.)

"There are many spelling variants which evolved from the ori ginalGerm an Ulrich. In America there are two known strains of Ulricks, both str ains using different spelling variants. We are descended fromthe earli er strain whose immigrant forefathers were: Stephen I b c1680; John: a nd one unnamed (possibly George). Reputedly they werephysically short a nd stout and married three tall English sisters.Possibly, they married i n the English seaman area of ChincoteaqueIsland, where, according to o ne tradition, they raised ponies(rounded up small wild horses known as C hincoteaque ponies) , whichthey swam to the mainland and sold.

The first known acquistions by the Ulrichs were in the area of thepres ent Adams Co., PA. The earliest records of that area wererecorded in C hester Co. The county statur of that part of Adamscounty successively c hanged; to Lancaster Co. on 14 Oct 1728: to YorkCo. on 14 Oct 1748; an d to Adams Co. in 1800.

Probably, it was in the Adams County area that Immigrant John Ulrich,w hile hunting wild turkeys, fell down a precipice and was fatallyimpale d on a tree snag. It has been written that an Eldrick (probablyStephen U lrich II) and a Studsman (probably Jacob Stutzman, Sr.) weretwo of the o rganizers of the Little Conewago Congregation, fromedabout 1738 near H anover, PA. Therefore, the prevalent migrations o fthe Ulrichs, and as sociated German Baptist families, weresequentually: to the Conacocheaq ue Creek Valley of the presentFranklin Co. PA, and the present Washing ton Co. MD; to the Morrison'sCove area of the originally large Bedfor d C o. PA; to thesouthwestern and western central areas of Ohio, especiall y MontgomeryCo.; and, to the central and northern areas of Indiana.
