Notes for Thomas MASK

Ancestry archives contains a posting by Debra:

"I was just informed that Thomas Mask was first transported to VA in16 38 by Thomas Clipwell of James City Co., VA. He was alsotransported a c ouple of other times, probably moving around thecolonies."

It seems that statement sparked a dispute among researchers:

Cavaliers and Pioneers, Patent Book 1, Part II, Page 99
Thomas Clipwell 600 acres James City Co., Nov 15, 1638, for the tran.o f 12 persons, including Thomas Mash.

Early Virginia Immigrants, 1623-1666, Surnames, M-N, Page 220

And finally from Rana:
"The Thomas Mash transported by Clipwell was in fact Thomas Mask hisna me was often sited as Mosh, Moss, Mash, Masque, and Maske. I havefound h is father on familysearch.org as John Wreyford, not sure ifthis is acc urate but if it is then it would stand to reason that hewas adopted. S ome believe that William Mask who came over afterThomas was not his br other but actually his Father."

And Ken:
"Thomas Mash (Mask) first appears in Virginia in 1638, by Clipwell. Hea ppears again in 1652, along with William - but William is not hisbroth er or father, he is his 13 year old son. I, too found the recordof Tho mas Mash, born about 1600, the son of John Wreyford, with noexplanatio n of the relationship. I think that the Thomas Mash whocame over in 16 38 is the same person arriving in 1652. I believethere may be more rec ord of him coming in by ship at other times, andit may be that he trav elled a lot."

Residences & events:

"Thomas Mask settled in Tidewater Virginia, in New Kent County, St.Pet er's Parish, where he died 15 Feb 1687/8. What are almostcertainly his d escendants were associated with St. Peter's parish forseveral generati ons, and then with a daughter parish, St. Paul's.They apparently lived i n that portion of New Kent County that laterbecame Hanover County."
