Notes for Matthew MOSS


The following is from Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish in VA:

Vincent vs. Nickle--O. S. 195; N. S. 69--Bill, 1812. In 1774 JosephVin cent bought from Mathew Moss a settlement right in Greenbrier,near Swo pe's Nobs and Greenbrier River. Orator then lived inShenandoah and was e ngaged in military service in Revolution and didnot remove to Greenbri er until after the war. In 1780 theCommissioners met at the Savannah, w here Lewisburgh stands, and inorator's absence Samuel Gwynn got a cert ificate in right ofsettlement. In 1782, at another session of Commissi oners,they~refused orator a certificate, but gave him a certificate fo r 400acres adjoining, but Simon Akers entered the 400 acres for himsel f onground that the Commissioners had no authority to grant the 400. M osshad settled long prior to 1774, but a dispute arose between him and Edward
Wilson and Moss bought out Wilson. Moss was killed by Indians after177 4. Survey for Jno. Berry, 380 acres, 1789. Assignment, 12th April,1786 , by John Ferry of Green Briar County, schoolmaster. John Wilson,Sr., d eposes 1812, in Mount Sterling, Kentucky. He was from GreenBriar."
