Notes for Thomas MOSS


This Thomas was not the son of the elder Thomas Moss but is placedhere u ntil his lineage can be determined.

From Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish in VA:

"About four years before the Revolution, Thomas Moss lived on the RoanO ak near Marmaduke Nophlite ferry, about 25 miles below Halifax townin N orth Carolina. He was then about 40 years old. Squire PerryCrossthwait e of Cynthiana, Kentucky, was his son-in-law. He had ason, John. Perry d eposes that Thomas helped carry Gen. Braddock offthe field. He also cl aimed to have whipped old Gen. Morgan. PhilipBuckner deposes in Bracki n County, Kentucky, 1814, that he knewThomas Moss in 1754, 1755 at Geo rge Todd's in Caroline County,Virginia, when he was on the expedition a s a drummer, in the campaignof that year under General Braddock and Co l. Muse and Col.Washington. Deponent has lived in Kentucky since 1783. C ertificatefrom Caroline County Court 10th February, 1780, that George T urnerserved as soldier in First Virginia Regiment under Washington. D ittofrom Spottsylvania, 17th February, 1780, that Nathaniel Gist serve das Lieutenant in Cap. Christopher Gist's Company of Rangers, in 1756,a nd served until 1757, when the Company was reduced. Also as Captainin C ol. Washington's First Virginia Regiment, raised in 1756 anddisbanded i n 1762; also as Captain in Col. Adam Stephens's Regiment,raised in 176 2. Ditto from Caroline, February, 1780, that George Museserved as Lieu tenant Colonel in the army in 1754. Ditto from dittothat Thos. Moss se rved as a drummer in 1754."
