Notes for Russell B CHILCOTE


His biography is in the Wood Co, OH history:

"R. B. CHILCOTE, Among the well-know and. leading farmers of Perrytown ship, whose names are scattered through the pages of this volume,none i s more worthy of mention than the gentleman whose nameintroduces this b rief biographical notice. Here his entire life hasbeen passed, his bir th having occurred in Section 22, Perry township,February 16, 1841, an d he is a son of Samuel M. and Susanna(Hatfield) Chilcote. Like. most f armer boys his education was such asthe district schools afforded, and , being the oldest his labors wererequired in the fields of the home f arm as soon as he was largeenough to handle a plow.

On October 2, 1872, at Bowling Green, Ohio Mr. Chilcote was married toM iss Euphemia J. Wood county, September 18, 1846, and is a daughterof W illiam and Margaret (Ikert) Mercer, members of the well-knownpioneer f amily of this section. Her primary education wassupplemented by a cour se in the Tiffin Union School, and she laterbecame a teacher of recogn ized ability. This worthy couple have nochildren of their own, but hav e given a home to Homer M. Johnstonfrom the time he was four years old . Mr. Chilcote lived on the homefarm in Perry township, until 1880, bu t at that time he located uponhis present farm in Section 16, of the o f the same township.Physically, he has never been very strong, and, wh ile a farmer, hasalways carried on that business moderately. Prompted b y a spirit ofpatriotism, he resolved to offer his services to the gove rnmentduring the Civil war, and enlisted in August, 1861, as a member o fCompany K, 49th O. V. I.; but the. at Camp Nevin, Ky., he was discharged the following November on account of disability. He however, againe nlisted May 2, 1864, in Company K. 144th O. V. I. and served withthe c ommand until discharged in August, 1864, doing guard duty muchof the t ime at Wilmington, Delaware.

Our subject and wife are members of the M. E. Church, of which Mr.Chil cote is a trustee. He is a good citizen and highly respected,being a d escendant of one of Perry's oldest and leading families. Atone time he w as identified with the G. A. R., being a member of YatesPost at West M illgrove."
