Verona was orphaned at age 2. Descendants said she told of beingshift ed from one family to another and even spent some time in aCatholic co nvent. They also said "she married four times and neverfound true hap piness " and added that she hated her grandmother butnever gave the re ason.
As Verona Smith, she was buried in the family plot owned byGrandfather L afayette Van Gundy.
