7/29/1850 Sycamore Twp, Wyandot Co, OH. At age 18 Nelson lived inthe h ousehold of wagonmaker Henry P McEwen, 24, but the rest of thoseliving t here were the family of sister John and Julia Gring, both23. Several o ther Van Gundys were in the same township.
8/6/1860 Padua Twp, McLean Co, IL. By the next census Nelson andfami ly moved west, joining the rest of the family there. He was a 27year o ld farmer with only personal property which was valued at $400.Wife Lu cinda was 22 and their 2 small children were John W, 2, andViola, 4 mo nths. They lived next door to Alfred & ElizabethFrankeberger, possibl y Lucinda's brother.

6/30/1870 Nashville, Barton Co, MO. The census taker recorded Nelson" Vanganda", 35, a farmer with property worth $400/418. Wife Lucindawas 3 0 and apparently son John had died, leaving only daughtersViola, 10, L iza A, 8, and Lettie, 1. They were the only Van Gundysin the county.
6/4/1880 Same place. That year Nelson was listed as a 47 year oldbla cksmith, perhaps explaining the higher than normal value ofpersonal pr operty in previous years. Both of his parents were bornin PA. Lucind a was 42 and only Eliza A, 17, was at home. They alsohad a boarder, W illiam Johnson, 22, physician.
His birth date may be 9/29/1831 as some say.
