"John Lyman Gundy, published and author, was born in Minnesota, buthas s pent most of his life in Missouri. His home is at ElDoradoSprings.

He was born at Albert Lea, Minnesota, October 3, 1878, son of John V.a nd Martha (West) Gundy. His father was born near Columbus, Ohio, andhi s mother in the North of Ireland. They were married at Corydon,Iowa. H is father was an architect and builder, and lived to theextreme age of n inety-six, passing away August 1, 1924, at ElDoradoSprings, Missouri. H is wife died in 1881, at Archie, Missouri.

John Lyman Gundy spent most of his youthful years in Cass and Cedarcou nties, Missouri, attending grammar and high schools and taking auniver sity extension course. As a youth, he learned the printer'strade at El Dorado Springs, worked as a journeyman in variouslocalities, following t he trade and the newspaper business in generalfor about thirty-two yea rs. In 1920 he founded the Rural Exchange andin 1925 established the H arwood Times, which he conducted for a yearand a half. Mr. Gundy is al so a minister of the Gospel, having beenordained by the Christian Chur ch in 1918, and he was pastor ofchurches at Shell City and Harwood. He w as commissioned a captain inthe United States Church Army of America. H e has written andpublished a great many articles, and is a poet as wel l as a forcefulprose writer, his outstanding work being "Ozark Pipe Dr eam" and"Tramp Printer Ballads," collective poems, published in 1929. H iswritings often appear in religious
magazines and trade papers.

Mr. Gundy was candidate for Congress in 1926, being defeated for theno mination on the Republican ticket in the Sixth District ofMissouri. He i s a member of the Brotherhood of American Yeomen,Missouri and Ozark Pr ess Associations, and has served chairs in theIndependent Order of Odd F ellows. He is also a life-long Methodist.

He married, January 1, 1917, Miss Jetta L. Plank, who was born inCedar C ounty, daughter of William and Tabitha (Long) Plank, thefather decease d and the mother resides in ElDorado Springs. They havetwo children, J ohn Marion and Lola Maxine."

4/19/1910 Box Twp Ward 2, Cedar Co, MO. At census time John L Gundy,3 2, and his bride of one year, Lena L, 35, lived with his widowed 81yea r old father, John V Gundy, all were born in MO. The elder Johnwas a p rinter at a printing office, John Jr was a laborer at oddjobs. No ot her Gundys lived in that county.

9/12/1918 506 S Kirkpatrick, Eldorado Springs, Cedar Co, MO was hisad dress when he registered for the draft at age 38. He verified hisbirt h date, said his occupation was minister of the M E Church Southin Eld orado. His father John V Gundy, was his nearest relative atthe same a ddress as above. He signed as Jno L Gundy. TheRegistrar's Report sai d he was medium height, stout build with browneyes and dark brown hair .

1/6/1920 W Spring St, Eldorado Springs Ward 2, Cedar Co, MO. Thatyea r John L Gundy was 41 years old at census time, second wife Jettawas 4 0 and from the next census it appears they were in their firstyear of m arriage at this time. Living with them was his 90 year oldfather John V G undy. John worked as a clerk in a dry goods store.

4/11/1930 City of Eldorado Springs, Cedar Co, MO. Recorded in thatce nsus were John L Gundy, 51, born MN, wife Jetta L, 50, andchildren Jo hn M, 10, and Lola M, 6, all born in MO. John married forthe first ti me at age 40, Jetta married at 39 (was actually theirages at this marr iage). John's occupation was newspaperman in apublishing house (perha ps he took over his deceased father'sposition?). He owned the home wh ich was valued at $2500 but did nothave a radio. They were the only Gu ndys in the county.

6/30/1949 Apparently John Gundy maintained a column in the NevadaDail y Mail on El Dorado Springs happenings.
A granddaughter wrote:

"He was cremated and his ashes were placed on top of my Grandfather,th ey are all buried together in this cemetary."
