Descendants said Jefferson had illegitimate son Henry but split withth e mother after Henry's birth. However, court record #231, dated1858, i ndicates Jefferson did admit paternity and deposited $500 inHenry's na me. Descendants believed the Van Gundy family to bewealthy but that w as not entirely true. They said Henry was raisedby his mother and ste p-father as their own but again that storyappears to be false as well a s he was found with his grandparentsuntil at least his teens.

7/10/1860 Union Twp, PO Withamsville, Clermont Co, OH. The censustak er found Jefferson, 20, living with the family of brother Henrybut he h ad no occupation so may have just arrived from MO. In thesame townshi p was the Kyle family that included his future wifeHarriet.

6/4/1880 Same place. That year Jeff Van Gundy was 44, occupation ish ard to read but looks like shortcut for master operator on therailroad . L Hattie was 34, and children in the family were H Susan,11, H Aaro n, 9, K Joseph, 6, and Jeff, 2. Two farm laborers livedwith them Jose ph Gilbert, 35, and George Ashbrook, 23.
