Notes for Jacob Noah COMBS


Family tradition is that Jacob was the father of 21 children and thatl efthandedness was a family trait.

Miami Co KS
(Louisburg, Miami Co., KS) "Jacob Combs, farmer, P. O. Louisburg,Secti on 8, Township 16, Range 24, has eighty acres of land, was bornin Ross C ounty in 1819, moved to Crawford County while quite young,was brought u p on a farm, moved to Buchanan County, Mo., in 1839,spent seven years i n that locality and then moved to Iowa. In 1862,he with his family
immigrated by wagon to Oregon, spending six months without sleeping ina h ouse. He spent two years in Oregon and Washington Territory butbeing d issatisfied with the climate, he brought his family back toIowa by tea m, spending four months on the return trip. During theirtravels over t he then unsettled regions of the West they were exposedto attacks from
numerous bands of hostile Indians then ranging over that region. In186 9 Mr. Combs moved from Iowa to Kansas and located on his presentfarm i n Wea Township."

Residences & events:

1840 Sycamore, Crawford Co, OH. That census recorded only one JacobC ombs and he and his wife were both 40-50 years old, too old to bethis c ouple. However, as a young couple, Jacob and Sarah might havebeen liv ing with them, if they were his parents.

Early 1850 CA If daughter Mary Jane was born in CA, they must havema de a trip out west before she was born and then back east beforecensus t ime in the fall.

10/2/1850 Dist 18, Madison Co, IA was where the next census takerfoun d the family. Jacob was a 30 year old farmer with propertyvalued at $ 1800. Sarah was 29 and their children at the time were:Barbara, 11, B en Frank, 9, and Lucinda, 7.

6/19/1860 Madison, Madison Co, IA. He was probably at the same placeb y census time again. That year Jacob was 40, still farming and hisest ate had grown to $4000/500. It looks like he had remarried andhad a b lended family of his, hers, and theirs. His second wife'sname was Eli zabeth, 33, with children: Ben F, 17, Sarah J, 14, JacobG, 10, Isaac G , 5, George W, 4, Sarah A, 2, and Thomas J, 1.

6/21/1870 Wea, Miami Co, KS. Jacob was 50 years by the next census,E lizabeth was 43 and the family had increased to 10 childrenincluding t wo of Sarah's children, Jacob, 19 and Mary J Morrow, 19.
Jacob and second wife, Elizabeth Pitman, are the only Combs buriedther e. Where is Sarah?
