The Methodists had an early start in Oregon, as Jason Lee was one ofth e first
protestant missionaries to come to the area and established aMethodist m ission and
settlement near Salem. In keeping with that tradition, the Methodistsw ere one of the
first dominant religious groups in Eugene. The First Methodist Churchw as established
in 1854 in the small log home of Solomon and Nancy Zumwalt, locatednea r the
present-day intersection of Highway 99 and Roosevelt Boulevard.Initial ly, itinerant
ministers led services. Reverend Noah Starr was the first regularminis ter to serve the
congregation while they met on the Zumwalt homestead.4 Though thecongr egation
established a formal church in town four years later, the earlymeeting s were important
to the establishment of the Methodist denomination in Eugene, and theg roup claimed
the distinction of building the second church building in the city,whi ch they used until
1886. This church was constructed by Solomon Zumwalt, himself, withthe h elp of his
son and other members of the congregation."
