Notes for Johann Whilem Andreas "Andrew" ZUMWALT

The Anglicized version of his name is John William Andrew Zumwalt.

1737 The family arrived in the New World on the ship Virtuous Grace.

Jax Zumwalt posted at Ancestry.com:

"What was the Andreas ZumWald family leaving behind! Both Andreas’sand M argaretha’s father’s had been dead for years. Andreas’smother, Susanna F eller ZumWald Seegmueller, estimated to be in herearly 60’s in 1737 do es not appear in Zweibrucken records after1731 and Margareth’s mother w ould have been 79 if she were stillalive. Andreas’s only known brother , Philipp Jr. had died 3 yearsearlier and Andreas and Margaretha seem t o have taken Philippsorphaned 10 year old son ( Balthasar ) into their f amily and wouldtake him to America with them. Philipp Jr’s. wife, Cath erine Steeg, would sometime in 1737 re-marry. Andreas’s sister Anna Cat herinaZumWald was married to Mayor of Neiderauerbach, Jacob Amboss"

From "The Andrew Zumwalt Family Outline of the First Four Generations," V ol. One, by Paul L. Reed, Colusa (CA) Library:
"The Andrew Zumwalt family settled in Pennsylvania in 1737 only oneyea r after the William Penn family and the Indians signed a treaty in1736 . The properietors took title to land west of the SussquehannaRiver, w here the town of York was laid out in 1741, and York Countywas separat ed from Lancaster County in 1749."

"All seven sons of Andrew Zumwalt lived in Virginia during theRevoluti onary War - service records of four of the five sons of AnnRegina have b een documented. All seven sons went west to Kentucky atthe close of th e Revolution.

Sons "George Sumwolt" and "Stuffle Sumwalt" migrated to Bourbon Co, KYw here they were among those listed in the militia of Ruddell's fort.

Then sons John, Jacob, Christopher, Adam, and Andrew moved fromBourbon C ounty, KY, with Daniel Boone to Missouri between 1796 and1798 where th ey became citizens of Spain, receiving land grants inthe St. Charles D istrict of the Louisiana District of the IndianaTerritory from the Spa nish government.

His bio was mistakenly applied to son Jacob in A History of PioneerFam ilies in Missouri:

ZUMWALT.-- Jacob Zumwalt, of Germany, emigrated to America, andsettled f irst in PA., where the town of Little York now stands. Hepurchased the l and upon which the town was subsequently built, anderected a cabin upo n it. Being afflicted with a cancer, he removed toVA., where he could o btain medical aid, and settled on the Potomac, not far from Georgetown. B ut he grew worse instead of better, andsoon died. In the meantime, the d eed to his land in PA. had beendestroyed, and his children lost what w ould have been a princelyfortune to them. This valuable paper was lost i n a rather singularmanner. One of the girls, while hunting about the h ouse for a pieceof pasteboard to stiffen her new sun-bonnet, found the d eed, and, being unable to read, she supposed it was some useless piece o f oldpaper, and used it in her bonnet. The deed had never been recorde d,and therefore could not be restored, and the heirs to the property never succeeded in establishing their title.....There were 5 Jacobs int he different Zumwalt families, and they were distinguished as BigJake, L ittle Jake, Calico Jake, St. Charles Jake and Lying Jake.
