The Battle of San Jacinto. On 21 April 1836, Captain Zumwalt’s sonAndr ew Zumwalt served in The First Regiment of Texan Volunteerscommanded b y Colonel Edward Burleson in Infantry Company F commandedby Captain Wi lliam J. E. Heard at the Battle of San Jacinto. Apetition for pension b y Andrew Zumwalt is in the Texas StateArchives:
"Mr. A. Bledsoe, State Comptroller, Austin, Texas Your petitionerAndre w Zumwalt, would respectfully represent, that he is one of theveterans o f the Revolution which separated Texas from Mexico. That hewas enrolle d in W.J.E. Heard’s Company about the 1st March 1836,served for three m onths during which he participated in the Battle ofSan Jacinto, That h e obtained an honorable discharge from Capt.Heard, countersigned by Li eut. Col. Somerville, upon which heacquired his Donation Land Warrant. " Andrew (his X mark) Zumwalt.
Andrew Zumwalt (1817-1886) married Harriet Lattimore in 1837 and theyh ad children Margaret Ann, James, Sarah, Robert, Clarissa, William,Mary E llen, Julia and Joseph. He married Elizabeth Hahn in 1877 andthey had a s on Thomas Zumwalt. Andrew Zumwalt is buried on his landgrant which bor dered on the east of the Gonzales town tract in theDenton Creek Cemete ry, 7 miles NE of State Hwy. 97 outside Gonzales.His gravestone reads: " ANDREW ZUMWALT, A San Jacinto Veteran, bornSeptember 1, 1817, died Nov ember 1, 1886" The metal Texas historicalmarker wreath and star, place d by the State of TX in 1936, has beenvandalized. Some references sugg est that an Adam Zumwalt was at SanJacinto in addition to Andrew Zumwa lt, although there is no evidencethat either "Black" or "Red" Adam Zum walt, both of whom wereaccompanying families on the Runaway Scrape, re turned in time toparticipate in the battle. In the 1850 census of Lav acaCo, TX, 32year old Andrew was listed with wife Harriet 27, Margaret 1 1, JamesA. 7, Sarah 4, Robert 2 and Clarissa J. 11 mo. In 1860, the f amilywas in the Gonzales town district of GonzalesCo. Listed were Harriet, James, Sarah, William, Mary, Julia and a W. Christian, farmhand f rom GA. In the 1870 census of GonzalesCo, Andrew and family(wife Harr iet, Mary Ellen, Julia, Joseph T., Mary, Sarah and Sion)are listed in t he Belmont District. Mary Jane Boykin, Sarah C.Boykin and Sion Andrew B oykin, listed as orphans, were children ofMargaret Ann Zumwalt and Da vid Boykin. The children lived with theirgrandparents after their mot her died. David Edward Boykin moved toMontana where he died in 1908. A ndrew Zumwalt's granddaughtersMargaret (Maggie) Meneley and Sarah Coop er (Lou) visited their fatherin Montana, Maggie lived out her life in B illings. Sion A. marriedand had 8 children in San Antonio, TX.
