James Scarlett
"James Scarlett, a representative farmer and pioneer settler ofAtchiso n county, Missouri, is a native of Orange County, Indiana, andwas born O ctober 20, 1827. He was a son of Samuel and Jemima(Charles) Scarlett. J oel Charles, our subject's maternalgrandfather, was a well known farme r of Indiana, where he ownedconsiderable property. He owned the land o n which the famous resortof French Lick is located. His children were A zer; William, who waskilled by the Indians while working on his farm; E lizabeth Wilson;Frankie Holbert; Cynthia Pinnick; Jemima, who married S amuelScarlett. Samuel Scarlett, the grandfather of our subject, was a native of North Carolina, born August 22, 1798, and in an early daymove d to Indiana, where he carried on farming. His children wereJohn, Sam uel, James, William, Stephen, Elizabeth and Virginia.Samuel Scarlett, J r., the father of our subject, was born in Orangecounty, North Carolin a, where he received his education. He marriedand then moved to India na, and in 1852 settled in Iowa, where hebought a claim and began farm ing. He died in Clarinda September 3,1869, and his loss was greatly f elt, as he was a good citizen and aprominent worker in the Methodist c hurch. He was married threetimes, first to Jemima Dunbar, who was a w idow with three children,--Elizabeth, Mary and Margaret. She bore him t wo sons, one beingWilliam W., who went to California in 1860 and died t here in 1899.He next married Mrs. Rachel Hankins, a daughter of Mr. B lagraves, ofTennessee. She was born January 8, 1804, and died May 24, 1 860. Shewas the mother of four children by her first marriage, namely :Elizabeth, Abraham, Harrison and David. Mr. Scarlett was the father of four children by his second marriage, namely: Mary, the wife of M.D amewood; Rebecca, the wife of William Williams; Samuel, ofColorado[who i s married to Nancy Ann Pace]; and Sarah, who married W.Reed, of Iowa[w ho was first married to Edward M. Pace]. Mr. Scarletthad no children b y his third wife. She bore the maiden name of AnnReed and was born Ap ril 18, 1806 while her death occurred January 19,1892.
"James Scarlett, whose name heads this sketch, was reared and educatedi n his native place and remained under the parental roof until he hadgr own to manhood. He farmed in Indiana until 1853, when he sold hisfarm a nd moved to Iowa, remaining there until 1863. He then sold hispropert y and located in Atchison county, where he bought one hundredand sixty a cres of land, and after making many good improvements,carried on farmi ng on a large scale. He handled a great many head ofcattle and was ve ry successful. He gradually added to his propertyuntil he was the own er of eight hundred and forty acres of splendidlycultivated land. He g ave several hundred acres to his children andnow owns but one hundred a nd eighty acres, on which he lives. In1898 a cyclone struck his farm a nd destroyed all the buildings,demolishing the orchard and fields and l eaving the place completelywrecked. Mr. Scarlett at once rebuilt his h ouse and barns, and,though they are not as elaborate as before, he has j ust cause to beproud of his home. He is a broad-minded man and keeps u p with allthe improvements of the day. He was a Democrat for many yea rs, latera Republican, and is now a Populist, having held several mino rtownship offices. Mr. Scarlett married Caroline Pace, a daughter of Edward and Susan (Foster) Pace, who were among the early settlers ofInd iana having moved there from Tennessee. Mr. Pace was a goodbusiness m an and a leading member of the Methodist church. He hadthree children b y his first wife: Cynthia, the wife of L. Winemyer;John and Daniel. F or his second wife he married Susan Foster, andthe following children w ere born to them: Richard, of Iowa; William,who died in Texas; Wesley , of Colorado, who was the captain of afederal company; Elisha C., who s erved in the Rebellion; Rebecca, thewife of D. Hawkins, who died in Co lorado; Caroline, the wife of H.Scarlett; Lewis, a Methodist minister a nd prominent citizen ofLincoln, Nebraska; and Elizabeth. Mr. Scarlett a nd Caroline (Pace)Scarlett were the parents of the following children: R achel, born inIndiana, in 1851, is the wife of Charles Scarlett, a dis tantrelative; Susan, born in Iowa, in December, 1853, is the wife of A .Vangundy, of Nebraska; Rebecca, born in Iowa, in 1855, is the wife of John Huston, a Methodist minister. Mrs. Scarlett died in 1860.
"On the 28th of March, 1861, Mr. Scarlett was united in marriage toSar ah Vangundy, who was born February 5, 1843, in Ross county, Ohio,a dau ghter of John and Lea Vangundy, of Pennsylvania. Her father wasborn J anuary 13, 1799, and was twice married. On the 24th of March,1821 he w edded Margaret Search, whose death occurred July 6, 1833,and on the 11 th of January, 1835, he was again married. His secondwife, Lea Vangun dy, was born May 11, 1809. John Vangundy the fatherof Mrs. Scarlett, m oved to Ross county Ohio, where he lived until1859, when he located in C lark township, Atchison county. He built alarge gristmill at Milton, w hich he ran for several years and thensold to a son. He also owned la rge tracts of land. He was aMethodist minister and in Missouri was a l ocal preacher. He diedAugust 7, 1874, at Milton, and his death was gr eatly mourned by allwho knew him. His second wife died October 4, 189 9, at the age ofninety years. The children by his first wife were: Jo nas, James,John, and Jane, who married Mr. Cartlich, a Methodist minis ter. Hischildren by his second marriage were: Samuel, of Kansas; Mar garet,the wife of N. Little; Sarah, the wife of our subject; and Willi am, afarmer of Atchison county. By his second marriage Mr. Scarlett i sthe father of four children, namely: W. W., born January 14, 1862; John G., born November 4, 1863; Samuel V., born November 14, 1865; andJ ames F., born January 12, 1867. Mr. Scarlett is a Royal ArchMason."

"James Scarlett died Wednesday, February 24th, at the age of 76 years,4 m onths and 4 days. He was a native of Indiana, having been born inOrang e County, of that state, October 20, 1827.
In the year of 1849 he was united in marriage to Caroline Pace. Fourch ildren were born to them and two, Rachel E. Scarlett and SusannahE. Va nGundy, are still living. The wife died in 1860, and thefollowing year M r. Scarlett was again married taking to wife SarahVanGundy, who was a n ative of Ross County, Ohio. To this union fourchildren were born, all o f whom are still living: Wm. W., John G.,and Jas. F. reside near Milto n, and Samuel V. lives in Yolo County,Cal.
In the year 1853 Mr. Scarlett moved his family from Indiana to Iowa,an d ten years later came to this county (Atchison) where he livedcontinu ously until the time of his death. The deceased was a thriftyman and w as well to-do in this world's goods. He was a splendidcitizen and almo st a life long Christian having united with the M.E.Church when quite y oung. He was one who made the world better forhaving lived in it." (Co unty name added.)
