1900 Polk Twp, Ray Co, MO. At census time Charles was 36 years old,w ife Lucy was 33, and had been married 2 years. Lucy had born 4childre n but only 3 still survived. Living with them were their sonCharles, 8 m onths, and Lucy's two daughters, Stella V Ashby, 13, andDella M, 7.
1910 Same place. That year the census taker recored John C, 38,marri ed 12 years to Lucy B, 43. Son Charles was 10, and others inthe house hold were Ashby children: Stella, 23, Maud, 17, and Lucy'sgrandson, M elvin, 6.
Descendant researcher Anita Duncan said Charles was thrown from ahorse , injuring his leg which never healed, probably due to, andcertainly c omplicated by, diabetes.
His obituary in the newspaper said:
"Charles Van Gundy, aged 62 years, died yesterday near lawson, havingb een taken sick Tuesday afternoon, although he had been in failinghealt h for some time. He was born in Iowa locating in thisvicinityin 1892. A w idow and one son, Charles survive. Rev. A. F.Dorrel conducts the fune ral this afternoon at the Lawson ChristianChurch. Interment inthe Laws on Cemetery."
