"J. N. CHILCOTE was born in Crawford County, Ohio, September 19, 1846.H e is one of twelve children born to Heathcote and Hannah (McClaire)Chi lcote. Of this family, five are living in Williams County, Hisfather i s a miller, at present owning a grist-mill in HillsdaleCounty, Mich., w here he resides. Our subject is also a miller, havingworked for his fa ther until he was twenty-one years old, when he wentto work in Orangev ille, De Kalb Co., Ind., continuing in this andother mills until 1875. I n 1876, in partnership with Thomas Seeley,he secured a patent for a ha ndle lathe. He then turned his attentionto store-keeping and saw-milli ng, and opened the first store in thevillage of Blakeslee, besides ere cting the first two buildings ; heis now running a circular-saw mill i n that place, also furnishes tiesand railroad supplies to the Wabash, S t. Louis & Pacific Railway, andgetting out different varieties of lumb er for the general trade. Hewas married September 20, 1868, to Eliza B . Gillis, of Edgerton,Ohio. His family numbers five: Anna A., William F ., George E., DaisyJ. and Frances E. Mrs. Chilcote is a member of the P resbyterianChurch at Edgerton. Mr. Chilcote served during the recent w ar fromFebruary, 1864, until the close, in Company K, Forty-Fourth Ind ianaVolunteers ; he was stationed in Tennegsee, and under Gen. Steedma n."
