SOLOMON SEERY, farmer; P. O. Poplar; was born Sept. 22, 1823, in RossC o., Ohio. Solomon Seery. Sr., his father, was born in WashingtonCo., P enn., and when 10 years old accompanied his mother to Ross Co.Educatio nal advantages were meager at best, but he, being the onlychild, was c ompelled to forego these, and labor for the support ofhis mother, and i s said to have learned to read after his marriage.His mother was after ward united to Jacob Foy, and came to thiscounty. He was married in Ro ss Co., to Magdalena Van Gandy, who hadcome there from Pennsylvania wh en yet young. He developed a farmthere, and in the fall of 1832, with his two eldest so ns, came here,and commenced clearing, having entered three 80-acre lot s. Hereturned to his family, and the following spring came here, erect ed acabin, planted a small crop of corn, and then leaving his eldest s onand daughter to keep house, himself and second son went back, and, after harvesting, started for the place with the family, and arrivedher e Sept. 1, 1833. He afterward entered three 80-acre lots, making480 ac res of Government land taken by this one man, which he and hissons dev eloped as fast as possible. He died July 2, 1860, and hiscompanion on J uly 24, l873. The subject of this sketch has alwaysbeen a tiller of th e soil, and his early life was spent in developingforest land. On Sept . 4, 1856, he united his fortunes with those ofElizabeth Park. She was b orn Nov. 9, 1832, in Hampshire Co., Va., andis a daughter of Amos and Sarah (Baker) Park. Her father moved fromthere to Licking Co., Ohio, in 1 836, and, two years later, came tothis county, where he lived until 18 73, and has since been located inWilliams Co., Ohio. His wife died in 1 871. Since marriage, Mr. Seeryhas lived on the farm where he now resid es, and where he has erectedconvenient and elegant buildings. His marr iage has been blest withthree children-Independence, John W. and Russe ll O. Both he and hisamiable companion have devoted many years to Chri stianity, and areconsistent members of the United Brethren Church. He i s identifiedwith the Republican party, and advocates temperance."
