Stan Van Gundy begins his fifth season as Assistant Head Coach underPr esident/Head Coach Pat Riley and his seventh year overall with theteam , having spent the first two years as an assistant coach.
Van Gundy is responsible for the coordination of the assistant coachesa nd all departments under Head Coach Pat Riley.
The 42-year-old Van Gundy came to the HEAT after serving as head coacha t the University of Wisconsin. Before his tenure as the head coachwith t he Badgers, he was an assistant at UW under current NBA SeniorVice Pre sident of Basketball Operations Stu Jackson.
Van Gundy began his coaching career as an assistant coach at theUniver sity of Vermont, 1981-83, and was head coach at Castleton StateCollege ( VT) for three seasons. After assistant coaching stints atCanisius Coll ege in 1987 and Fordham University in 1988, Van Gundywas named head co ach at Massachusetts-Lowell and spent four seasonsthere before being h ired at Wisconsin. In eight years as a collegehead coach, Van Gundy co mpiled a record of 135-92 (.535).
A native of Indio, CA, Van Gundy was a star guard at Alhambra HighScho ol. He played in college for his father, Bill, at SUNY-Brockport,where h e was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the entire SUNYsystem as a s enior. Van Gundy graduated from SUNY-Brockport in 1981with a B.A. in E nglish and a B.S. in Physical Education. His fatherretired as head bas ketball coach at Genesee Community College inBatavia, N.Y. Jeff Van Gu ndy, Stan’s younger brother, is the headcoach of the New York Knickerb ockers, where he also worked under thetutelage of Pat Riley from 1991- 95.
Van Gundy and his wife, Kim, reside in Miami with their four children,S hannon (10), Michael (7), Alison (4), and Kelly, (2).
