Bill "retired" as head basketball coach at Genesee Community Collegein Batavia, N.Y.
"The word was 'retrenched,' but I was fired," Bill Van Gundy saidyesterday from Batavia, N.Y. "It was a bad experience."
When Bill Van Gundy was dismissed by Brockport State, his star pointguard, Jeff Van Gundy, transferred to Nazareth. The father has sincewon 269 games and lost 118 at Genesee Community College.
Sons Stan and Jeff both followed in their father's footsteps, becomingnationally known basketball coaches as well.
"They're both better coaches than me," Bill Van Gundy said yesterday." I wouldn't say I pointed them into coaching, but they definitelywere raised around basketball. They took to it like ducks to water. Idon't recall either of them, after junior high school, ever sayingthey were going to do anything else."
