6/29/1870 E Buffalo Twp near Lewisburg, Union Co, PA. At census timeh e lived next door to brother Ellis and 2 doors down from brotherJohn a nd their mother. Christian was a 37 year old farmer with asizable amo unt of property valued at $10,000/2500. Wife Caroline was30 and they h ad 4 young children: Justin L, 8; Sarah J, 7; Anna E,4; and Harriett M , 2.

6/13/1880 Same place. The census taker listed Christian Gundy, 46,wo rks on farm. Wife Carrie was 41 and their children were Justin L,17; S allie D, 16; Annie E, 14; Hattie May, 12; George D, 9; andMorris C, 3.

6/23/1900 Still there. That year the census taker recorded him asChr istian Van Gundy, 66, married 40 years to Caroline C, 61, who hadbirth ed 6 children, 5 of whom still survived. Living with them weredaughte rs Sarah I, 39, and Annie E, 34. Christian and both girlswere school t eachers. Next door was sister Lucinda and John Owenswith their son Wi lliam. In the same township were John and CarolineGundy.

In 1940, the University purchased the house located on 337 S 6th St ont he corner of Taylor & S 6th St from Christian Van Gundy for $9,900.00. T he house was remodeled as a dormitory for 15 women and aresident hoste ss. It became the first Spanish House, a dormitory forwomen intereste d in Spanish. It was named in honor of EvelineStanton Gundy, Class of 1 890, who was the first Dean of Women atBucknell, 1897-1904, and who ma rried Dr. Charles A Gundy, Class of1893, one of the physicians who set u p the pre-med course at theUniversity. In 1964, Gundy House was razed t o make way for Vedderhall."
