Notes for Adam VAN GUNDY


Residences & events:

1830 Turbut, Northumberland Co, PA. At census time Adam and his wifew ere both 20-30 years old and had 2 little girls under the age of 5.

1840 Buffalo, Union Co, PA. The census taker found Adam with ahouseh old loaded with females. He was 40-50 years old with a familyof 1 mal e aged 5-10, 1 female under 5, 2 at 5-10, 1 was 10-15, 1 at15-20, and h is wife, 30-40. Nine doors down was brother John whileon the next pag e were brothers George and Jacob.

10/16/1850 E Buffalo Twp, Union Co, PA. Listed as Adam Gundy, 47, hew as a farmer with real estate worth $7000 at census time. Wife Sarahwa s 41 and the children were Mary Ann, 21, Eliza, 20, Matilda, 18,Christ ian, 16, Ellen, 13, Lucinda, 11, Abram, 9, and Margaret, 7.Counted wit h them were Levi Sterman, 4, B F Owen, 19, student, and JF Bell, 22, a lso a student.

7/16/1860 Same place. The census that year recorded his name asGundy , a 57 year old farmer. His wife, Susan, was 51 and they hadchildren: E lizabeth, 27; Christian, 25; Abraham, 19; and Margaret,17. Also livin g there were daughter Lucinda Owens, 22, WilliamOwens, 2, servant Levi S terne, 14, and Wesley Turner, 38. Next dooris nephew Ellis Gundy fol lowed by his father John (Adam's brother).

7/13/1870 Still there, PO Lewisburg. In that census, his name was"Aa dam Gundy" at age 66, still farming and his property value hugefor the d ay at $20,000/4000. Susan was 55 and 3 adult children werestill at ho me, Elizabeth, 40, Abraham, 30, and Margaret 28. Alsoliving there wer e 19 year old servant, Ellen Meck, Westly Kramer, 45,school teacher an d Terrysmith Sterner, 45, cigar maker.

It seems his property was used for markers in early days. From theAnn als of Buffalo Valley, PA, 1775: " After protracting, I found thecour se to correspond with the site of the road as described by oldcitizens , viz: Leaving the river at Strohecker's landing, it passedup his (Ch ristian Haines?) lane and by an old house that formerlystood in the so uthwest corner of Adam Gundy's field...."

And again: (i.e. through the University grounds, to Adam Gundy andWil liam Brown's corner;)

6/14/1880 Still there. That year he was 76, his wife was listed asSa rah, 71. Living with them were children, Abraham, 38, andElizabeth, 4 0, nephew WW Cramer, 50, retired school teacher, andhired hand, Charle s Baker, 25. Adam was still farming.
He was still alive when the 1885 history of Susquehanna & JuniataValle y was written.
