Martin enlisted in the Union Army on July 19, 1862 during the CivilWar f rom Scio, OH. He was wounded on March 19, 1865 in Bentonville,NC.His w ounds were from a "mnnie ball" that injured his head, neckand shoulder . He was sent to a hospital in New York, and thendischarged on May 19, 1 865 at Camp Dennison, OH. He was described asfive feet nine inches tal l, light hair, gray eyes. His illnesseslater were described as neuralg ia and severe affliction of thenervous system. He applied for a Pensio n in Custer County in 1890 asunable to support himself.
