6/10/1880 Dist 103, Washington Twp, Wood Co, OH. At census timeDavid l ived in the same township as his father. David was listed at36, a far mer, wife Allice was 27. They had 2 small children:Lester, 4, and Al lice M, 1. They had a servant, Della Clarke, 22.
David was mentioned in an interesting story from local history:
"Alpheus Minerd was born in 1845, about the time his family moved fromN ew Rumley, Harrison County, OH to Tontogany, Wood County, OH. He wasth e son of Samuel and Susanna (Hueston) Minerd.
Alpheus was a Civil War soldier and prisoner of war. Later, his mentald isabilities led the federal government to convene a grand jury toinves tigate charges of criminal fraud. As an older man, he wasbrutally murd ered, a sad postscript to a life lived under the darkcloud of mental i llness and physical suffering.....
The cold-blooded murder of Alpheus by a mulatto man had racialovertone s. It "landed on page 1 of every newspaper in the state andbrought eve rlasting fame -- of a sort" to Hardin County, OH, theplace where the c rime occurred. The killer, William Nichols, had "thedistinction of hav ing been one of the first prisoners executed in theelectric chair at t he Ohio state penitentiary" in Columbus. In fact,he and his murderer a re mentioned in the January-February 2004 issueof Timeline Magazine of t he Ohio Historical Society, in a coverfeature about the penitentiary.. ...
David V. Gundy, who grew up on an adjacent farm, recalled that Alpheus“ seemed to take delight in destroying things and injuring andabusing an imals.” Neighbor Hiram Cunning said that as a young man,Alpheus “often r an away from home and remained away some time…”Several friends recalle d that he earned the nickname “Queer Alph”or “Fool Alph.”....
Discharged in July 1865, he went back to his parents’ home, andlived t here until about October of that year.
Brother Jacob Minerd, recalling this period, said “…it was thenthat I f irst noticed anything wrong with his mind -- (That was onthe first da y after his return home from the army.)”
After his return him, Alpheus’ behavior declined steadily. NeighborDav id V. Gundy thought he had “grown older and uglier.” Anotherneighbor, S amuel Duke, said sharply that Alpheus “seemed to be anoverbearing disp osition. It is the nature of the whole family.”
Ancestry.com says David died 6/23/1933 but Alice Gundy was listed as aw idow in 1900.
