Heis t hought to be an older brother of Conrad Newman, who was born 1744and c hristened at Evangelisch, Kriegsfeld, Bayern, Germany, abt 40mi. NW of M anheim, Rhineland, in the Palatinate of Germany. He andConrad Newman i mmigrated with their parents, Johan GerhardNeuman/Newman and Anna Marg aretha on 7 Oct 1749 to Philadelphia, PA.
Nimrod began military service in 1760 as a fifer in Old Virginia Regt.o f militia under Col. William Byrd, in French & Indian War. Hemarried S arah Arthur, daughter of John Arthur and Rebecca or Betsy____ Arthur, c irca 1763 at Dunmore -- now Shenandoah -- Co., VA. Hebegan military se rvice circa 1776 at Shenandoah Co., VA, served inCapt. Adam Clement's C o., VA Militia, was sent to assist Gen. Greenein the SC campaign of 17 81.
He and Conrad Newman operated a grist mill; Nimrod received a grant of3 54 acres for Revolutionary service. "Payne - Newman. In 1769 JosiahPay ne was given permission to erect a grist mill on Little OtterRiver (DB #3, p. 547) in the Otter Hill Community. In 1778 the tractwas passed t o Nimrod Newman. In 1778 Nimrod's younger brother,Conrad, also was gra nted permission to erect a mill on Little OtterRiver. It is believed t hat Nimrod Newman and his brother, Conrad (themountain people referred t o him as "Coonrad") came to America fromGermany. They probably came th rough the Port of Philadelphia, thencethrough the Shenandoah Valley, t hen to Bedford County. Nimrod, theelder brother, married Sarah Arthur, d aughter of John Arthur, ofBedford.
"According to records, Nimrod owned several tracts of land on LittleOt ter. In his younger days he had served as a fifer with the Virginiatro ops commanded by Col. William Boyd in the French and Indian War.It is a lso said that he served in Capt. Adam Clement's company duringthe Revo lutionary War and was with the militia group which sought tojoin Gener al Greene in South Carolina, in 1781. Conrad is said tohave served in C apt. Alexander Micah's company during the Revolution.He owned several h undred acres in Bedford County on Crab OrchardCreek. In addition, he o wned several other enterprises, plus thegrist mill on Little Otter fro m 1778 until 1805. After that timeNimrod moved to Grayson County where C onrad had preceded him in 1796.
"Nimrod Newman and Sarah (Arthur) Newman had 13 children. Sons, ArthurN ewman, married Lucy Creasy, in Bedford, October 9, 1793, and NimrodNew man, Jr. married Deborah Wileman, in Bedford County, March 1,1808. Dau ghters, Betsy Newman married Pleasant Creasy, in BedfordCounty, May 26 , 1791, Patsey Newman married John Hudnall, in Bedford,December 5, 179 3, and Sidney Newman married Franklin Creasy, inBedford, December 20, 1 793."
Nimrod Newman was named co-executor of the estate of Sarah's father.
