He and Dollie had 8 children, two of which died young. The oldest sonfought in the Civil War but caught the measles on the way home anddied.

1871 Lamar Co, MS. There he homesteaded 160 acres of land, theplace where Purvis now stands. When the railroad came through, hegave them the land for the right-of-way. The town was named for himand he encouraged people to settle there, sometimes giving them lotson which to build their homes.
