Notes for Beulah PURVIS


She was the only child of her mother.

She was a nurse and at the time of her death the newspaper said shewas a n urse at the Missouri Baptist Hospital. She attendedValparaiso for 2 t erms followed by one semester at the MichiganAgricultural College befo re deciding on the nursing profession. Shethen entered the Chicago Me morial hospital for training andtransferred to the Missouri Baptist ho spital where she graduated in1927.
She committed suicide, leaving a note on the table beside her cot:

"I have tried to play the game and I find I can't continuewithout w ork, which i don't seem to be able to find.
I have worked only 7 days in over two months-just a toughbreak-an d I think the best solution of the situation is to give mybody to a me dical school; then there will be no burial expenses for Ihave no money . I have taken eight kinds of poison."

Continuing from her obituary:

"Immediately upon finding the body, her mother Mrs Amanda Bolin (notPu rvis?) of this city was notified and Francis Purvis and L WMcMullin (f uneral director) went to St Louis to make arrangements tohave the body s ent home. The body arrived Friday."

The Sullivan, IL, newspaper article said she "shot herself fatallyThur sday while alone in her room in the Roosevelt Hotel, St Louis,accordin g to a telegram received here.
She had been a nurse in St Louis for several years but, accordingt o a recent lettr to her mother, had not been able to obtain work forso me time. She also had written that she was ill and her motherbelieves t hese two facts were responsible for her suicide. She hadbeen living i n the hotel."
The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon at the McMullin Funeralhome w ith rev C E Barnett officiating. She was interred in a cryptin the Mo ultrie County Mausoleum.
