Notes for Zachariah CAMPBELL


He was 21 in the 1860 census, making his birth year 1839.
Zackariah Campbell, one of the few last Civil war veterans of thiscomm unity, died at his home several miles east of this city Wednesdaymorni ng at the age of 81.

Campbell came to this state soon after the Civil war and has been acon tinual resident of this county for the last forty years. He enterthe s ervice of the war on the first day of June, 1861, and was amember of C o. E., 25th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry forthree years. He w as regimental color bearer from Stone River toAtlanta and was mustered o ut September 5, 1864.

Mr. Campbell was born in Coles county, Ill. and lived there until heca me to Kansas. Mrs. Campbell who survives him was from the samecounty i n Illinois. They were married in 1865, a year after hereturned from wa r.

Mr. Campbell is the father of seven children, five sons and twodaughte rs. Most of them are now residing in this county. They areJoe, and Joh n who live near this city, George at Hymer, Bob atAmericus and Zackari ah at ElDorado. The daughters are Mrs. J. A.Cooper and Mrs. John Micke ljerd„, both of this county.

The funeral was held at the home Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock,Re v: McCulloh of the Methodist church conducting the ceremony. Fourold C ivil War comrades were present at the funeral to pay tribute tothe gal Ient soldier and to sorrow at the loss of another from therapidly decr easing list.

Mr. Campbell has been one of the builders of the community and hasleft g ifts without value. To the bereaved ones we extend sinceresympathy.
