Notes for Jacob COONROD


Either Jacob and Frena married much later or their children's birthdat es are incorrect, or perhaps they started their family much laterin li fe than usual.

Residences & events:

1750 Berne, Switzerland. Following the death of his wife, he tookhis y oung family and set out for the new world aboard the Patience.

Philadelphia, PA was where they landed.

From A History of Pendelton Co, WV:

"Conrad. Jacob came from Canton Berne, Switzerland, in 1750, andsettl ed here in 1763. He was a widower when he left Europe. B.1705, d Dec 1 , 1775." It goes on to list his children as postedhere.

From Early Settlers on the South Branch of the Potomac River, AugustaC o, VA:

Page 462.--29th May, 1761. Same (Mary Wood, of Frederick, James andMos es Green, of Culpeper), to Uldrick (Ulrich) Conrod (Conrad),£55.12, 27 8 acres at same place(on North Fork of South Branch ofPotowmack), part o f 370 acres patented to Robert Green, 12th January,1746. Delivered to s ame (Andrew Johnston, June, 1767).

1763 Pendleton Co, WVA, was his choice for final settlement. Thecoun ty history states: "It is said than when Jacob Sr. came to theSouth B ranch, he found on his land a 'squaw patch' of about one acre,which fo rmed the nucleus of his cleared land, and that there was alsoa cabin t hat he temporarily made use of."

Local history recorded 2 Coonrods who settled in the county:

Conrad (A) - German - 1753 - South Fork Mountain, southwest of FortSey bert (Woolrick?)
Conrad (B) - German - 1763 - South Branch bottom, 1 1-2 miles belowRud dle (Riddle?) (Jacob)

Augusta Co, VA, court records mentioned him often:

5/24/1763 "James Green and Moses Green, of Culpeper, and Mary Wood,of F rederick, to Jacob Conrod, £90, 457 acres on South BranchPotomac, part o f 660 acres patented to Robert Green, who devised thesame to grantors, 2 03 acres being sold to Joseph Skidmore and GabrielCoyle. Teste: Mathew P atton, Postel ( ) Hover and Henry ( ) Pickles.Delivered: Jacob Conrad, J anuary, 1765."

Page 2.--19th August, 1767. Jacob Conrod to Joseph Skidmore, £3, 14acr es on South Branch of Potomac (Patowmack), part of 457 acreswhereon Ja cob lives adjoining said Skidmore's mill tract.

8/2/1773 "Estate of Jacob Caplenger, of South Branch, appraised byJac ob Conrad, Jacob Friend, Wolrie Conrad."



Augusta Co, VA, court records:

"Jacob Conrad's will--To son, Jacob, testator's dwelling place; todaug hter, Barbara, the place she lives on (wife of Charles Hedrick);to dau ghter, Elizabeth, the place she lives on, bought of ChristopherThompso n and James Skidmore, wife of George Fisher: to daughter MaryConrad's t wo children, Margaret Barlet, John Clifton, land boughtfrom Saml. Capl inger; to Jonas Friend, a debt to be paid; son to signhis three sister s their deeds by his Earship. Teste: Wolerey Conrad,John Skidmore, Geo rge Kile. Proved, 19th March, 1776 (translation
by George Carpenter) by the witnesses. Jacob Conrad qualifies asadmini strator."
