Benjamin Berry was born on Oct. 16, 1758 (1728?), and his birth isreco rded in the parish records. Benjamin married Elizabeth Thornley,the d aughter of John Thornley and wife Ann Woffendale, and had thefollowing c hilfren; Benjamin, who married Jane Bell, John Berry whomarried Elizab eth, Reuben Berry, who married Dinah, William Berry,Thomas Berry, Dull abella, who married James Benson and Sarah Berrywho married John Humph reys. Benjamin was a lieutenant in theFrederick co militia, in 1758 t hrough at least 1761. He also shoppedat the same store in Winchester, a s did his brother, and hispurchases are recorded for the christmas sea son of 1761. His nameappears in many land deals of the area, in perso nal property taxlists, and in 1792, Benjamin was sworn in as Deputy Sh eriff.Benjamin laid out the town of Berryville, in Frederick (now Cla rke)county, Virginia with a land purchase on 1798, and laid out a town covering 20 acres, lying on both sides of the great road leading fromSn icker Gap to Winchester, and originally surveyed by GeorgeWashington. H is town was established by an Act of the GeneralAssembly of Virginia, o n January 1. 1798, and there is still onebuilding in Berryville that w as built by Benjamin.

"There are separate deeds of land in King George County from JosephBer ry, Jr., to Benjamin Berry, to Charles Carter, under the date of1758. T hese tracts adjoin that of each other and land of Enoch Berry.They lie o n the north side of the Rappahannock River. These deedsshow that this l and was inherited from their father, Joseph Berry,Sr., by will, 1749, w ho inherited it from his father, William Berry,and wife, Margaret Doug hty; who inherited it from Margaret's fatherEnoch Doughty, who inherit ed it from his father, Rev. FrancisDoughty.
In 1758, Joseph Berry and Benjamin Berry arrived in the Shenandoah ande stablished Berry's Ferry. This later became Berryville. Capt.Thomas B erry's descendants (he lived in the Shenandoah) state that hewas their y oungest brother, and that their family seat had been"Berry Plain," Kin g George County, Virginia. There is no definiterecord of the last name s of the wives of Capt. Joseph Berry, Sr.;Joseph Berry, Jr.; or Benjam in Berry."

"We the undersigned heirs of Benjamin Berry deceased, in the divisiono f our fathers property agreed among ourselves that Negroe Juber ashe h ad been a faithful servant.....be free." Signed, Joseph,Thornley, Reub en, John & Peter Berry.
